You guys are pretty selfish if you won't play without your triggers or whatever else...
Im sure Jim agress with me but you have bands like Disrupt,Doom, and Discharge, who went the d.I.y atitude and hit their kit like they meant it rather than relying on electronics, I played in a Crust/metal/ punk band in a living room where wasn't even enough room for the equipment let alone the 30 people who watched us play...
I hit hard as I could to get my point across...
I don't see why people now can't just play but would rather worry about pro tools and the like, I mean as far as shows go, if your playing drums to get paid then your in it for the wrong reason, I have been gigging for 4 years, and gave gotten paid maybe 3 times, and all less than 30l as many have said I've played in front of the bar and I have played show where we opened for The Exploited and their was at least 200 people...
You wanna make Fans? Play your instrument well...
Come to Detroit, their is a billion bands here, some are PHENOMINAL, better than a lot of touring acts, and out of those 5 good ones their was is atleast 1000 bad ones, all who sound like Pantera rip offs who can't even get good settings on their amps....
Get good and play solid and people will come..
That's if your playing to the right people and good venues... and well don't play metal....
Metal will never hit the forefront of popular music, and as it has been said befor on this forum, Slipknot is about as heavy and filled with Blasts are gonna get in the mainstream. |

Are you familiar with the concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy? |

Heart = truth.
People recognize sincerity. Play "honestly", a.k.a. "hard", and it shows. Integrity, etc., etc.
If you are playing music for reasons beyond self-satisfaction and the desire to share art, stop.
If you are able to make a living and prolong your art, great. But, don't be a prick and forget why music exists in the first place. Never forget your role as an artist and an entertainer.
Most music lovers will take 1 "imperfect" performance played from the heart over 100 Behemoth soundalikes any day. Use your noggin, use your heart, use your ears.
Happy Just Another Sunday. Cheers. |

i think you shouldn't be too picky if you're starting with your band, plus you can't expect professional conditions for a small band with a few gigs in their career.
plus you have to be ready to play in any conditions, i mean, i'm used to something always failing in a gig, specially being in this country where gigs almost never have the proper sound, but, FUCK IT, we always play with our hearts!!!! i've played gigs where i couldn't even hear anything but my drums, oe they sounded like ass...hell i haven't even played with triggers in my life!! but if you sit there complaining about the PA or whatever, then your performance WILL suck... we're really getting used to play in shitty places, but people come see us cause we care about enjoy our time in the stage and people enjoying the show, we simply love playing with all our energies and delivering all on the stage, even if it is the crapiest on earth... in my opinion that's the kind of attitude i apreciate more when i go see a band, when they play with full force and they play it well
Cheers |

My opinion is strike a balance. I will play anywhere that will let me bring MY drums, mic 'em up, and run 'em through something. Give me that and I'll put every fibre of my being into playing the best fucking show I can play. |

Shit yeah, We ve been asked to play places that want us to use in house drums, amps etc for quick change over and said no.
All we need to play is an inhouse pa with a few mics, We bring the rest(i bring my own kick mics). We didnt all spend thousands on our gear for our own sound just to use other peoples shit, and for other people we dont know to fuck our shit. |

To be fair, I get relatively picky about where we play. It's more about reaching as many people that want to see us as possible than anything else. Example: I'm probably not going to open for Korn just to play in front of a few thousand people that want nothing to do with death metal. I'd rather play in a basement for fifty people that really want a good show.
Does that make sense? |

Yes i agree and have argued that point before as well, you have to play in my opinion to people who are there to see and expect that type of music.
I mean fifty people head banging and enjoying the music is better than a thousand people just looking at you. |

Maybe you are just blowing their mind?
I remember seeing Portal at Australia's big metal festival years ago and the crowd just stood there stunned. I think playing to volumes of people is going to be good business sense, BUT you have to deliver. A lot of death metal acts won't have a frontman who can actually handle working a crowd that big! |

Hasn't anyone seen the story/documentary of ANVIL yet? These guys got fucked for over 25 years and never even got a record deal until their like 15th album!! The point of the story... unless you got the coattails of some other band to ride on (like a lot of the hair metal bands did), you gotta sweat your ass off and play every single shitty venue until it happens. No one says you need to play the same ol shit-hole more than once.... but anything less than that is narrow minded and somewhat conceited on [your] part. |
